As a nonprofit organization that receives no direct state or city support and relies on earned income and gifts to operate our programs, volunteers are integral to helping us achieve our mission to provide ocean science education, to interpret Scripps Institution of Oceanography research, and to promote ocean conservation. They enable us to provide educational programs for over 50,000 school children in San Diego and surrounding counties, and interpret our animal programs and exhibits to the visiting public. Volunteers help visitors from around the world discover the wonders of the ocean. Inspire conservation and showcase the groundbreaking research at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. More than 400 volunteers guide visitors through exhibits, answer questions, and work behind the scenes. From students and working adults to retired professionals, Birch Aquarium seeks a variety of expertise from volunteers of all backgrounds.
Some exhibits, such as the tide pools, require additional training prior to volunteering, so the student should communicate interests right away to the site mentor.
